Melvin faithfully corresponded with many soldiers when they were serving in both the Pacific and European Theatre’s
I tried to research if Melvin was still alive and was unable to find him.
If Melvin J. Smith has descendants, I want to tell them how grateful my father Jacob Johler was that he took the time to write.
Jacob and Marie Johler kept all correspondence in a beautiful cedar chest. Unfortunately, not all has survived.

I sometimes become overcome with emotion as I work through this material. I have shed many tears. When I do ,the sun seems to refract through my prisms and offer reassurance.
When the colors dance across the pages, I get lost in the moment.
I believe it is God’s way of sending strength and comfort. I also believe that Melvin J. Smith is saying thank you too for remembering.
