Roger Mansell was an amazing individual. He worked tirelessly to compile lists of the Prisoner of War Camps in the Pacific Theater.
Sadly, he passed away too soon yet he left an enormous gift behind.
My husband and I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Mansell at the 2007 American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor Convention in Washington, D.C.
After I returned home, I copied my dad’s diary (United States Army T. Sgt. Jacob J. Johler who was POW #564 in Mukden.)
Roger Mansell took the time to phone and thank me as he said it was very “comprehensive” in that next to some of the entries, Jacob Johler listed cause and sometimes the date of death.
Roger not only compiled rosters, he visited the archives in Washington DC and spent hours going through boxes and photographing material.
Even when Roger Mansell was terminal, he made a video about his work and encouraged others to share their information freely. Roger had contact with the Far Eastern Prisoners of War Organization (FEPOW). When individuals would call or write, especially the descendants, he worked very hard to find answers for them.
For the soldiers and civilian contractors that did not return, Roger shared that many descendants can find closure when they find out information about their loved one. Roger encouraged the men and the descendants to compile and share the information freely.
To watch the video entitled “Roger Mansell, WWII Researcher: Don’t Reinvent the Wheel”, browse over to youtube.com and simply place the name “Roger Mansell” in the search video box. The film is 21:01 seconds long.
Stay tuned for a photograph of Mr. Mansell at the 2007 American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor Convention.
So thank you Roger Mansell from the daughter of Jacob J. Johler.
